On Paper & Parchment: Tales From An Archive

Sunday 12th September 2021 at Monksgrange 2-5pm

​

An afternoon symposium including the public introduction of the recently acquired 350 years old Charter of Charles ll’s grant of lands to Solomon Richards, ancestor of the current owners of Monksgrange. Dr. David Brown, Trinity College Dublin and Archival Discovery Lead for Beyond 2022 Project, will speak of where the Charter fits into Irish and Wexford history and its contribution to the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland – an e-reconstruction of the Public Record Office destroyed in 1922.

 

Professor Emeritus Dr. Douglas Wilson, Knox College, Illinois, USA, travels here to tell of his research into a family acquaintance and his surprise at finding a collection of hundreds of relevant letters in a private archive in rural Ireland.

 

Lesley Whiteside will speak on her role in the 2021 Letter Book Digitisation Project generously grant aided by the Heritage Council.

​

Jeremy Hill will launch the Monksgrange Archives publication Old Paris in Orpen Eyes – a selection of thirty images of 1899 Paris by Goddard Orpen as photographer, lending insight into Europe’s medieval capital.

Illustrated lecture at Enniscorthy Library, Covid permitting, 'Obediently Yours - letters of Edward Richards of Monksgrange,  1856-1897.' Copies of 4500 letters reveal local and international contacts and commentary on politics, trade, commerce, travel, family and local goings-on in this now digitised archive of great educational  benefit and a source of local history.

Heritage Week:~ Virtual online presentation of Letter Book digitisation and indexing project. Video upload to Monksgrange Archives YouTube channel of project progress. Delayed due to covid restrictions to 26th August.

'Monksgrange: a trefoil of house, garden and landscape' an illustrated lecture by Jeremy HIll.

This a recorded talk which can be accessed from the Irish Georgian Society website, 'events' tab, and 'buy a ticket.' The cost goes to the IGS not the lecturer!
